2017 Holiday Drive
Mayor Tom Barrett and County Executive Chris Abele will once again join forces to make the holidays brighter with the 11th Annual Holiday Drive, running November 20th through December 1st. This year’s drive supports USO Wisconsin by collecting toys for the local children of military service members.
The effects of war can extend far beyond the deployed service member. Military families face a number of challenges before, during and after deployment. We can show our appreciation by easing the burden of the holiday season and lifting the spirits of our troops and families. Let’s make sure they have the opportunity to cherish the moments they have together as a family.
History of the Drive
Since 2007, the City of Milwaukee has held an Annual Holiday Drive for servicemen and women. City of Milwaukee employees, community partners, businesses and residents have risen to the challenge and collected thousands of toiletries, snacks, goodies and more to help bring a little holiday cheer to those who have sacrificed for our country.
The drive began as a way for the City of Milwaukee to share their gratitude with Wisconsin troops who were far away from their homes during the holidays. More than 2,000 goodie-filled boxes were shipped to Wisconsin troops serving our country overseas in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.
In 2013, the Holiday Drive took on a new beneficiary: our veterans. With more and more troops returning home from overseas service, the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County formed a partnership to support hundreds of veterans and their families in the greater Milwaukee area. We provided hundreds of complete home starter kits for the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative and brought the comforts of home to the patients receiving care at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center.
Milwaukee is fortunate to have a number of excellent military and veterans’ service organizations. Each year, we continue to find new ways to spread joy among them.
