Milwaukee Shines: For a Sustainable Solar Future

Milwaukee Shines is the City of Milwaukee’s solar energy program, led by the City of Milwaukee’s Office of Environmental Sustainability. In March 2008, Milwaukee was named one of 25 Solar America Cities by the U.S Department of Energy. Since that time solar in Milwaukee has grown exponentially, thanks to investments by the City, private businesses, organizations and individual residents.

Milwaukee Shines works to support solar energy implementation in the City of Milwaukee by:
  • Providing education for the general public and solar professionals
  • Providing connections to financing solutions to invest in solar today
  • Improving the process when installing solar in Milwaukee

Our History and Progress

When formed in 2008, Milwaukee Shines set a goal to reach 1 MW of solar capacity in the city of Milwaukee. Today, we have more than 1.25 MW of solar energy being produced in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee was named a Solar America City by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in 2009. In 2012, the City of Milwaukee received additional support from the DOE to help bring down the cost of solar installs by eliminating obstacles in the solar install process. Milwaukee has streamlined the permitting process, created a solar zoning ordinance, and provides financing resources for home and business owners. All of these projects and processes are meant to be shared with other municipalities. If you would like to replicate any of these programs in your own community, email solar@milwaukee.gov.

Check out our Milwaukee Solar Map, which showcases public institutions, home owners, and private business owners that have made an investment in solar. We hope you will add your home or business to this map.
