For six years, Mayor Tom Barrett has held a Holiday Drive for troops serving overseas. City of Milwaukee employees, community partners, businesses and residents have risen to the challenge and collected thousands of toiletries, snacks, goodies and more to help bring a little holiday cheer to those far away from home during the holidays.
Through this annual effort, more than 2,000 goodie-filled boxes were shipped to Wisconsin troops serving our country overseas in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.
As more and more troops return home from overseas service every month, the focus of the Holiday Drive has shifted to what we can do to help veterans who have completed their service and are back home in our community. The 7th Annual Holiday Drive will benefit returning soldiers and the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative.
The Holiday Drive’s partnerships are growing, too. This year, County Executive Chris Abele is joining the effort to help make a larger impact and involve communities throughout the County.
