The Milwaukee Water Works provides commercial and industrial customers with a reliable, renewable, and low cost supply of high-quality water not available everywhere in the United States. A declining block rate provides a further price advantage. The City of Milwaukee’s water utility is recognized by regulators and water associations as a national leader for its water quality monitoring and excellent water quality. The water is ozone-disinfected and biologically filtered. Its qualities include moderate hardness, low total dissolved solids, consistent low temperature and it is provided at reliable pressures, making Milwaukee water an ideal platform for manufacturing, processing, and research.

Since 1993, the Milwaukee Water Works, with the endorsement of the Mayor and Common Council, invested $417 million in its infrastructure from treatment plants to distribution systems, to ensure high quality drinking water and reliable supply. MWW uses ozone gas as its primary disinfectant in the water treatment process. As water from Lake Michigan enters the plants, ozone is bubbled into the water in large contactor tanks. This highly reactive gas destroys illness-causing micro-organisms and harmful compounds. Ozone removes taste and odor compounds and reduces the formation of disinfection byproducts. Particles are removed from the water through coagulation, flocculation, settling, and biologically active filtration. Chlorine is added as a secondary disinfectant. Fluoride is added to reduce dental cavities among consumers. A phosphorous compound is added to control pipe corrosion to prevent lead and copper that may be present in pipes from leaching into the water. Finally, ammonia is added to change free chlorine to chloramine. This is a stable form of chlorine disinfectant that maintains a residual in the distribution system in accordance with DNR and Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. Pure, fresh water is delivered to the taps of customers.

The Milwaukee Water Works collaborates with the City of Milwaukee Department of City Development, the M7, the M7 (FaB) Food and Beverage Milwaukee Network, and the Milwaukee Water Council to retain and recruit commercial customers who use water in processing or product.
